What is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal has become a popular and effective method of treating unwanted hair. The Candela GentleLASE system is a long-pulse high energy alxeandrite laser. The system emits a beam of light that passes through the skin and is absorbed in the hair follicle at the root. At nearly the same time, the system also delivers a cool burst of cryogen onto the skin which helps with increased comfort and cooling of lasered skin. For your comfort and for the health of your skin, it is our policy to start with a low level of energy and gradually increase the energy with subsequent treatments as tolerated.
Laser hair removal is an effective way to permanently reduce the density of your unwanted hair. Most patients notice results in just a few sessions, with full treatment course being generally 4-8 laser sessions. You may require annual or semi-annual maintenence treatments.
Patient compliance plays a large role in the effectiveness of your laser hair removal. Please follow the guidelines that are provided for you by Dr. Ross and our aesthetician. We are pleased to offer you a thorough complimentary consultation prior to your laser treatment.
Important points of information for anyone considering laser hair removal:
♦ If your skin is compromised due to sunburn, a rash, open sore/wound, or if an infection is present, your laser treatment will be rescheduled until the skin has healed.
♦ The Candela GentleLASE system is highly effective on darker hairs in combination with a lighter skin tone.
♦ Blonde, grey and white hairs are not treatable with our laser. Please consult with our aesthetician for alternative hair removal options.
♦ Moles will be avoided during laser treatment. We will not laser hair growing out of moles for any reason.
♦ We do not laser over tattoos. Please be aware if you have a tattoo in the area you wish to have laser hair removal, we will laser around the tattooed area for your safety.
How to Prepare for Your First Treatment:
♦ At least 2 weeks prior to your treatment, avoid tanning and unprotected sun exposure. Tanned skin does not laser well with our type of hair removal laser. Your risks of side effects increases, and the success of laser hair reduction decreases.
♦ Hair should be in the "stubble" stage (≤1/16 inch). Please shave the area to be lasered the day prior to your laser treatment. This allows the laser energy to go directly to the root of the hair. For best results, please discontinue waxing, tweezing, depilation creams, and/or bleaching at least 2 weeks prior to laser hair removal.
♦ Shower the morning of your treatment. Please remove makeup, lotions, perfume or cologne, and deodorants prior to your arrival at our office.
♦ You may take Tylenol, Advil or Aleve prior to your treatment. Please do not take aspirin unless directed by a physician as it thins the blood and will make you more susceptible to bruising.
♦ Bring a list of your medications and allergies to your appointment.
♦ Wear clothing you will be comfortable in during your treatment. Some areas require wearing clothing that exposes the area to be treated. For instance, underarm patients should plan to wear a sleeveless shirt; Legs patients should plan to wear a pair of shorts or loose pants that can be rolled up. Men who are treating their back or chest may wish to change into a pair of shorts or sweatpants to expose the waistline better.
♦ For Bikini Patients: Please shave the area that you wish to have lasered prior to your appointment. Our office provides disposable underwear and treatment gowns for your convenience. You may choose to wear your own underwear for treatment, but please note that they must be either white or light-colored and expose the area that is to be treated. Please note that our office does not provide laser hair removal services for the male bikini area. This treatment is available to women only.
